Client Challenge:
The North York Moors Sustainable Tourism Project is a two-year initiative that aims to develop and promote tourism in a sustainable way. This means that tourism should bring benefits to the environment, local economy and resident communities of the North York Moors. With backing from the North York Moors National Park, the North York Moors Leisure Guides promotion was founded in the summer of 2004. Mixd were asked to develop an identity for the project then apply it to a leaflet and website containing a comprehensive directory of leisure activities in and around the North York Moors National Park.
Our Solution:
We developed a site that would give users easy access to information about the guided activities in the North York Moors area. The overall look is clean, stylish and friendly and has been designed to reflect the outdoor lifestyle. The site uses strong, activity lead photography to provide a glimpse into the range of activities available throughout the area. Visitors can browse the directory or use the search facility to help find the activity they are interested in.
The site is driven by a content-management system that allows for contributions from widely dispersed editors. Extensive user testing was completed during all phases of the project to constantly refine and optimize the design, information architecture, functionality and content.
The client wanted the site to be accessible by as many people as possible. Mixd carried out extensive usability testing in the development of the site and also ensured that the site was built to meets the W3C's (Web Accessibility Initiative) standards and guidelines for creating accessible websites. By designing this site with accessibility in mind it means that more people can access it’s content.
