Introducing Matt, our new developer

16/03/2022 by Matt Taylor

My name is Matt Taylor and I’ve joined the lovely team here at Mixd as a developer. Prior to starting this new role I’d worked at the University of Leeds for many years, most recently as a PHP and WordPress developer.

About me

Growing up in the Midlands (brummie accent only available on request) in the 80s and 90s has left me with the following Mastermind special subjects to pick from:

  • The works of Chris Morris and Armando Iannucci
  • WWF 1988-1993 (The Hogan/Warrior era)
  • Twin Peaks
  • The Amiga 500

You’ll probably see my eyes light up if you start talking to me about any of those topics!

I love discovering new things, so you can often find me:

  • Hunting down new music on Spotify and BBC 6Music
  • Playing new games (video games, card games or board games).
  • Eating out at a new restaurant
  • Pushing myself out of my comfort zone to try new experiences (I’m going to try my hand at flying a plane this year!)

I’m also a keen runner, enjoy writing music and working through a killer sudoku.

My career journey

Although I’ve now found a natural home in web development, my journey here has been an interesting one.

A large portion of my career to date has been spent working at the University of Leeds. I’ve always kept myself on my toes, gaining a rich experience from working on various projects and learning new systems and technologies. Over the years I’ve organised software rollouts,  orchestrated IT provision in new buildings, designed intranets with SharePoint and built strong relationships with many staff and colleagues working at the University.

Being someone who loves to find creative solutions, when the opportunity came up to make a sideways transition into web development I knew it was something I had to do.

So, in 2019, I started an apprenticeship in Software Development alongside working on WordPress and PHP-based sites. I’ve not looked back since and ended up taking a lead role in the work to bring the University’s WordPress sites in line with accessibility standards.

Why Mixd?

I’m really excited to work with Mixd. Mixd’s commitment to functional and accessible design really resonated with me.

Working alongside such a talented team at Mixd is going to help me learn and grow as a developer. In turn, I bring my broad experience of working with accessible websites, public sector knowledge, WordPress development and support.

As has been echoed on both sides, it’s a great fit!

Two weeks into my time at Mixd I’ve been impressed by the friendly team atmosphere and culture. I’ve received such a warm welcome and already feel like a valued member of the team.
