I’m Sam and I’ve joined Mixd as a Graduate Developer after finishing my degree at the University of Leeds studying Digital Media. My degree encompassed a range of subjects but my interest peaked when learning about web development and interface design which led me to seek out and complete a placement year and summer internship in the industry, where I was involved in the development of e-learning sites and the creation of custom software for in-house use. Working at Mixd is my first non-internship role in the industry and I’m really excited to have this opportunity to get stuck in and learn from the talented bunch at Mixd!
Normally you’ll find me playing games, usually on the Switch or PS4 but I am fond of a good board or card game too. I enjoy DIY projects and just making things in general, whether it be furniture, gifts for people, or the odd bit of Lego! At home we do some woodworking projects and have got an ABS and resin printer which are great fun and can make all kinds of things, like figurines and replica props. Whenever I get the chance I love going ice skating, and I could skate around for hours without getting bored so the new rink opening in Leeds has been a godsend!
I’m a massive animal lover and when I’m not talking about tech I’m probably nattering on about my two gerbils, my cats back home with my family, or one of the many animal sanctuaries I want to visit.
I first met the Mixd team when I offered a place on Work in the Web 2020, a three-day workshop that Mixd runs for students who want to work in the web industry. Everyone was super friendly and I was really impressed by the team and everything they put together for the group at Work in the Web, so naturally I jumped at the chance of an interview for a graduate position when it was mentioned!
I’m really looking forward to being part of the Mixd team and I know I’m going to learn loads! I’m especially looking forward to being part of the next Work in the Web so I can be part of teaching other students all about the web and helping them get into the industry!
Expanding our team at a time of such uncertainty may seem an unusual move, but we offered Sam the position before coronavirus hit and we wanted to stand by our word and besides, Sam is such a talent and we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to see just what she can do at Mixd! We look forward to welcoming Sam properly when we get back to our Leeds office but, for the meantime, she’ll be working from home just like the rest of us. Welcome Sam!
