From 01 April 2022, Integrated Care Systems (ICS) will be in place across England. Over the past few months our team here at Mixd have been working alongside our Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) clients to create user-centred website platforms for these new NHS ICSs.
By undertaking robust discovery research, it has allowed us to understand what is really important to residents and we have defined an understanding of the primary goals and success factors through a series of stakeholder engagement workshops as well as facilitated end-user research through surveys, focus groups, “depth” interviews alongside Google Analytics analysis and heat mapping. This research has enabled us to capture and document user needs, organisational requirements and problem statements.
As a result, Mixd has developed a framework that can now be used to design and develop an ICS website quickly and efficiently. Our front-end framework is built on WordPress (an open source content management system) using the new Gutenberg block editor and is the culmination of over a decade of experience in building enterprise public sector websites. It incorporates custom WordPress Gutenberg blocks based on the NHS Service manual and is Accessibility compliant with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Similar to our WordPress platform for crisis communications, that we developed as part of our response to Coronavirus (COVID-19) last year, the platform can quickly and easily be deployed for other Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across the UK. The goal was simple – design and develop a platform that creates a positive, professional image for the new organisation, supports people to find the right NHS service and encourages local people and communities to get involved and give feedback.
Making sure the services we create work for everyone is really important to us at Mixd. We have a proven track record in web accessibility and have been involved with web standards since it began.
We are involved in the wider accessibility community, running training and contributing to WCAG standards. Importantly, we have extensive experience in delivering accessibility audits for public sector services and are familiar with the service standard and NHS design patterns.
Our Integrated Care System website platform meets AA conformance with WCAG 2.1 and we can optionally provide a detailed Accessibility Audit as part of our pre-launch deliverables. This approach ensures compliance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
During the unfolding of the COVID-19 crisis, we saw communications emerge as a core function responsible for keeping critical services running. We worked extensively with the NHS to quickly build a WordPress platform for communications which have since been delivered to local authorities and Police forces too. We understand the new ICS websites will be required to be launched by 1st April 2022 and our platform reduces the delivery risks by utilising an existing framework which has already been tried and tested.
